Subject: I want to build a school which is to be the last building to fall in quake
Darling Gwen
Thank you so much for thinking of us.We all survived the devastating earthquake. This is really a horrible one. You visited the epicenter when we went to the Jiuzhaigou a few years ago with Gwen. Remeber we stop on the way to pick apple in the apple garden? Wenchuan county seat, that is the epicenter. The real scale of this earthquake is 8.6 Richter.Survivors said they saw huge stones flying off the mountains and it rained stone, which killed so many people. The most sad thing is the collapsed school burried hundreds of students, all lovely kids. I love them so much. Every time I traveled through the region, I saw the kids wave to us, I once asked them why they salute us, they said their teachers told them to salute us for visiting as tourists who brought them business opportunity and made their life better. The kids voice still ring in my ear.
I am now working hard on a charity compain with China International Foundation for Poverty-stricken rurual area。 Most shools in rurual areas in China are very bad quality infamous as bincurd building, and this is why so many students and kindergarden kids killed.
We are now collecting donation to build a anti-quake school in the earthquake-active area, the quake-hit area this time and we do not want to see the first building fall is school in the future earth quake. We want the future school is a earthquake shelter. All the donors will always see and forever see where their donation go and are.
China now received over 200 million USD worth donation, being received by different charity organization and government organization, no one knows where the money will go and how much will be embazzled in the process of alleviation. This is why we want the Foundatiion we work with make sure the money go to what we want and we will see the construction details.
I will show you the detailed plan and hope you can forward it to anyone you know and help us with this charity work,1 dollars to one million is emotionally the same.
Wish you all well
Sam

Update from Sam
I just had a nice long chat with Sam via SKYPE. The earthquake was May 12th. On May 14th, Sam organized the first concert for relief efforts and they raised 12 million Chinese Yuan. They had a second concert and raised another seven million. He told one of the inspirational stories about a little boy who had been pulled from the rubble and his first words were, “Can I have an icey-cole Coca Cola?” Somoene joked with him, “Do you want Pepsi or Coke?” He said, “I want Coke,” although he had never tasted either one. He had only heard about this western drink. It just shows how brave people are in spite of a terrible situation. Now they are preparing for the Olympics and Sam is working with Steven Speilburg’s secretary for his part in the opening ceremonies. Sam is also organizing an international “Gratitudes” concert, which will bring many international musicians who were born in Sichuan, now living abroad, back home. Sam will be working with us on our Silk Road and other tours to China for 2009.
Keep in touch!

During the Olympics
Sam is living in Beijing and enjoying the thrill of the Olympics. He received one of three non-govenmental invitations to the opening of the new American Embassy in Beijing. He met and visited for 10 minutes with Dr. Henry Kissenger, who was most intersted in our South China trip when we went to Kunming to see the site of the Flying Tigers. Sam is starting his own business called “Uncle Sam …..”. Exciting times ahead, but his first commitment are our tours! See the Silk Road program and China Highlights probably to be scheduled over Easter.

April 21 - May 12, 2009 22 Days from San Francisco via Air China • $5690

| Caravan bells jangled for over a thousand years. From Chang’an, China’s ancient capital of eleven dynasties, the mystical Silk Road stretched to the shores of the Mediterranean. Along the fabled trade route, silk, spices, tea, precious metals, ivory and textiles made the journey in about a year and a half. But more, the Silk Road was an exchange of culture between the Oriental and Occidental civilizations, carrying major religions, literature, art and technological advances. Colorful characters such as Italy’s Marco Polo and China’s Xuanzhuang Monk left romantic tales to add luster to its history. Today the Silk Road is being revitalized and is increasingly becoming once again a channel of friendly economic and cultural exchange between China and the rest of the world. Our 22-day tour spans the portion of the northern route from Kashgar to Chang’an, today’s Xi’an. |
